Tailors’ guild hat of Emil Schwerzmann (1899–1986)

A grey hat with a round crown and a folded-up wide brim edged with a blue-and-white cord. The brim has a v-notch cut out on either side. One side has a shield-shaped blue badge with two different white scissors, the symbol of the tailors’, cloth-shearers’ and tradesmen’s guild of Zug. Writing on the leather sweatband inside the hat reads: “Aug. Weber Zug” and “E. Schwerzmann / 58”. A small bow is sewn onto the leather seam.

Emil Schwerzmann-Oppenhoff (17/2/1899–14/10/1986) was co-master of the tailors’, cloth-shearers’ and tradesmen’s guild of Zug from 1936 to 1986. As a member of the Burgher Council, he was president of the Commission for the Historical Museum of Zug from 1939 up to the establishment of the “Museum in Zug Castle” Foundation in 1974. The commission had been established in 1903, when the Burgher Commune of Zug terminated the contract between it and the Zug Section of the Local Historical Society and took over management of the Historical Museum in the town hall.

The tailors’, cloth-shearers’ and tradesmen’s guild of Zug (also known as tailors’ guild) was founded in 1408. Its hostel is the Ochsen City Hotel on Kolinplatz square in Zug.
