Zusammen mit der Magd Ita geht es für die SuS des Zyklus 1 auf eine Entdeckungsreise ins Mittelalter. Und mit Ita wird es garantiert nie langweilig, weiss sie doch über alles und alle Bescheid. Und sie hat auch zu allem und allen eine Meinung. Schliesslich ist sie als Magd hautnah am Puls ihrer Zeit! Begleitet wird Ita vom abenteuerlustigen Huhn Berta. Gemeinsam mit den SuS geht es von der Stadt aufs Land und wieder zurück. Interaktiv und mit vielen haptischen Elementen erleben die SuS das Leben der Menschen vor über 700 Jahren hautnah. Eine Zeitreise, auf der es Spannendes und Überraschendes zu entdecken gibt. Die Führung kann sowohl zu Beginn, während oder auch als Abschluss einer Unterrichtseinheit besucht werden.

They will find out what the architecture, for example the castle moat and elevated entrance, meant for the castle inhabitants’ safety and get an idea of the living standards in medieval castles. They will also learn about the historical methods of lighting a fire and can practice striking sparks. By trying on pieces of armour, they can get an insight into the life and training of a knight. The game “Middle Ages or not?” teaches them which everyday items existed in the Middle Ages and how skilled you had to be to play knucklebones.

The Frog Prince, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty – Anna knows them all, and of course she is happy to share her knowledge with her audience. It does not end there, however; as a maidservant, Anna has experienced the stories first hand and knows all the little secrets of the leading characters, and some of the bigger ones too. She brings her young visitors to the individual locations, where they can play along, hazard a few guesses and sing a song or two.

Sie erleben auf interaktive, haptische und spielerische Weise, wer vor über 700 Jahren im Mittelalter das Sagen hatte, wie die Gesellschaft organisiert war und wie in der Zentralschweiz gewohnt und gegessen wurde. Auch woran sie geglaubt, wie sie gearbeitet und wie sie gefeiert haben, wird nachvollziehbar. Dabei bewegen wir uns von der Stadt aufs Land, in die Kirche und wieder zurück. Auf ihrer Zeitreise werden die SuS Spannendes und Unerwartetes entdecken. Nebst der Andersartigkeit der Lebensweisen im Mittelalter steht aber auch das allgemeine des Menschseins im Zentrum. So werden die SuS nachvollziehen können, wie Chancen und Zwänge das Handeln der Menschen dieser Zeit geprägt haben, aber auch, dass die Zentralschweiz bereits im Mittelalter eine dynamische Region in einer gesamteuropäischen Entwicklung war. The workshop “Medieval cooking” encourages participants to use all their five senses! Following a short introduction to the history of Zug Castle, we will cook and eat the same as the knights would have done.

Students will learn who ate and drank what in the Middle Ages and how they lit fires, cooked and dined at the time. They will then have the opportunity to experience what they have learned. Once they have also practised their medieval table manners and the entertainment has been arranged, the students can eventually settle down and enjoy the food they have prepared.

This workshop combines experiential learning with a guaranteed hands-on access to medieval cooking and living.

Workshop (120 minutes)

This re-enactment workshop turns the wheel of time back to the year 1352 and brings the conquest of Zug Castle by the Swiss Confederates back to life. What did the Old Swiss Confederacy look like? Why did Zug still not join the Confederacy and how did the Confederates manage to conquer the castle?

Divided into two groups, the students will take on the role of either attacker or defender and develop their own strategies. They will have the opportunity to learn the basic techniques of medieval combat using practice swords. They will then carry out an analysis of the castle architecture: which of the components helped to reinforce the defence and which of them left the castle open to attack? Another discipline is the technique of diplomacy. The students will draw up a statement of intent for attack or defence and discuss how justified the attack was. Who will be clever and diligent enough to win the battle? Maybe history will even need to be rewritten for a short while!?

Wie lebten die Menschen im Mittelalter hierzulande? Wie wohnten, was arbeiteten sie? Unter welchen Voraussetzungen bewältigten sie ihren Alltag? Wie organisierten sie Landwirtschaft, Handel und Markt, das Handwerk? Welche Rolle spielte der Glaube? In welchen Beziehungen und Abhängigkeiten standen sie? Auf dieser Führung wird schnell klar, so düster wie das Klischee besagt, war das Mittelalter auf keinen Fall. Und im Spätmittelalter veränderte sich zwischen 1200 und 1550 die Zentralschweiz enorm. Wie das vonstatten ging, woher wir das alles wissen und wie vielfältig das Leben vor über 700 Jahren war, erleben SuS auf einer spannenden Zeitreise. Von der mittelalterlichen Stube auf das Land bis zu den höchsten Alpweiden, zu Besuch in der Kirche und wieder zurück in der Stadt beim städtischen Handwerk und festlicher Musik. Natürlich werfen wir auch einen Blick auf das speziell für die Ausstellung entwickelte interaktive Landschaftsmodell der Zentralschweiz und die gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen über die Jahrhunderte aus der Vogelperspektive!

This educational offer is suitable as an introduction to or an immersion in themes and subjects from the Middle Ages up to the present day. In this action-packed, interactive tour, students use the wheel of time to embark on an exciting journey through the eras. They can discover the different phases that Zug Castle went through making history from the Middle Ages until today. Each era will reveal its characteristic features and invite students to delve into the lived reality of past periods.

By feeling the heavy knight’s armour on their skin, by marvelling at the corset from the Baroque period, by deciphering artful 19^th century paintings or immersing themselves in the fully equipped cobbler’s workshop – each era will leave students with unique impressions and sensual experiences. A journey through time where lots of interesting and surprising things are waiting to be discovered.
