Accompanying the special exhibition «hǒus, tǒun, fẹ̄ld – the Middle Ages in central Switzerland», the museum is setting up a medieval workshop. On selected Wednesday afternoons, the workshop will offer young and old alike the opportunity to experiment, try things out and slip into the role of medieval craftsmen and women.
Learn about typical materials and techniques of the Middle Ages. Find out how a stonemason worked his stones without modern machines, how laborious it was to make your own spoon, why salt was so precious and how difficult it was to write with a quill and ink! We invite our guests on a lively journey of discovery into the Middle Ages – with their heads, hearts and hands.

If you want to know what people ate in the Middle Ages and how they made fire, cooked and ate at the table, this workshop is just right for you. Together we will make a fire, prepare the food, set the table and learn the rules of etiquette that might seem strange at times. If you fancy a little adventure and vegetarian food, come along. Individuals are also very welcome.

With Ita, you're guaranteed never to be bored, as she knows everything about everyone in the Middle Ages. After all, as a maid, she has her finger on the pulse of her time! Families and children aged 6 and above are warmly invited to join Ita and the adventurous hen Berta on a journey back to the distant Middle Ages. Together, they will travel from the city to the countryside and back again. An eventful journey through time, full of exciting and surprising discoveries.

Traditional crafts and a military encampment in the castle courtyard.
For a weekend, the festival grounds are transformed into a vibrant medieval world with market stalls, camp life and a variety of performances. Artisans offer insights into traditional techniques, traders display their wares, and jugglers and musicians provide entertainment in the narrow streets.
Over the years, the festival has become a fixture in Zug’s calendar of events, combining history with entertainment. The unique setting of Zug Castle, historical costumes and lovingly crafted details create a unique experience that brings history to life every two years and invites visitors to linger.

On Swiss Castles Day, our special exhibition ‘hûs,stat,fëld – The Middle Ages in Central Switzerland’ comes to a close. To mark the occasion, admission to all activities today is included in the museum entry fee. Your ticket secures you a place on your chosen guided tour. Depending on availability, you may also be able to take part in other activities.
Let curator Christoph Tschanz whisk you away to the Middle Ages one last time, or take another journey into the everyday life of Ita, the maid. Musically, the cello ensemble Das Sägewerk will once again captivate us.
