Painting, three musicians, Räbefasnacht “Räbedibum!” Baar,
The portrait-format painting shows three stylised figures from the front wearing long, high-necked gowns. Each figure is holding a musical instrument. The figure on the left is wearing an orange dress and a burgundy bicorne and has a cymbal in each hand. The figure in the middle is wearing a burgundy dress and a golden laurel wreath with pendants on the sides and is holding a tuba. The figure on the right is making a face; it is wearing an orange robe and a burgundy top hat and is holding up a frame with jingles mounted on a pole. Above the figure in the middle is a brown-orange sign with “RÄBEDIBUM!” written on it in red and blue. The background is dark blue (at the bottom) and purple (at the top) with visible horizontal brush strokes. The artist’s signature “HOTZ” can be seen at the feet of the figure on the right-hand side. The picture is painted in gouache on paper in a white metal frame with a cream-coloured mount. It is covered at the back with a Masonite board held in place with metal cramps. The Masonite board has a small label in the top right corner with the number “52” on it.
Eugen Hotz (also known as Geny Hotz) was a fierce advocate for culture in Canton Zug and in particular in the municipality of Baar. From 1947 to 2000, Hotz designed the badges every year for the Räbefasnacht carnival in Baar. In 1977, he won the Zug Cultural Award and in 1994 the municipality of Baar presented him with its first ever Cultural Award. In 1982, Eugen Hotz and his wife, Annemarie Hotz-Schmid (22/07/1926–17/01/2009), became honorary citizens of Baar.
