Six postcards with costumes from the 1912 Costume Festival in Zug

Six black-and-white postcards with groups of women wearing different traditional Swiss costumes at the national costume festival held in Zug in 1912. There are captions at the bottom of each postcard (2x “Group of Zug patricians from the period 1690–1800”, 2x “Group of Zug peasant costumes”, 1x “Group from Old Schwyz”, 1x “Group from Zurich and Aargau”).

The Zug Costume Festival took place from 22nd to 24th June 1912 at the Casino Theatre in Zug. The proceeds from the festival were donated to the building fund for the church that was planned for the Neustadt area of Zug. Interestingly, the Costume Festival coincided with the seventh general assembly of the Swiss Heritage Society (founded in 1905), which also took place in Zug. The delegates from the different sections met for a meal on the evening of Saturday 22nd June 1912 at the Ochsen restaurant, before attending the Costume Festival. The General Assembly was held on Sunday 23rd June 1912 in the chamber of the Cantonal Council. The June issue of the magazine of the Swiss Heritage Society (“Heimatschutz, Jahrgang 7, Heft 6: Zug”) from 1912, was designed as a commemorative booklet for the general assembly in Zug, and carried a report on the upcoming festival on page 98.
