Nativity set with figures from the Landtwing household in Zug
The nativity scene is a mixture between a grotto and a ruin painted in shades of brown and green. It includes the following figures: Mary; Joseph; the Infant Jesus in a cot made of twigs and moss and covered by a crocheted blanket; the three Magi; the Angel of Annunciation; a shepherd holding a lamb; two sheep; three rams; a donkey; a dromedary (a one-humped or Arabian camel); an ox.
The nativity set was bought at Rupert Wyss’s shop at 25 Neugasse in Zug and was in use from 1937 to 1997. Alois Payer (07/05/1878–09/07/1960) and Franz Wipplinger (1880–1953) are believed to have made it. They were sculptors from Austria who ran a workshop in Einsiedeln where they created religious art, including nativity sets.
