Lithograph, Zug carnival procession of 1867
The lithograph is a humorous take on a carnival procession of the carpenters’, cabinetmakers’, wood turners’ and old coopers’ guild. Inside the circle is a depiction of Kolinplatz square with the Kolin fountain and the Ochsen Inn. A large crowd has assembled on Kolinplatz. The actual carnival procession with its different groups and themes takes place outside the circle. The individual sections are labelled as “the beginning, the carpenters’, cabinetmakers’, wood turners’ and coopers’ guild, the Celts, the patriarchs, the Middle Ages, poulaine, minstrels, stargazers, lansquenets, Spanish costume, rococo, plait, Jacobins, Hägglingians, crinoline, breech-loader cannon “The Barbarous”. A scroll at the bottom of the lithograph bears the legend “humorous carnival procession / of the / carpenters’, cabinetmakers’, wood turners’ and old coopers’ guild / depicting: / CHANGING FASHIONS. / ZUG. / 1867.” On the right-hand side beneath the lithograph is the artist’s signature “autographed by Ed Stadlin”.
